Where are you going? You’ve set your intentions for the new year, your visualising where you want to be. But how are you going to get there?
Intentions are emotionally driven. And the thing with emotions is that if you don’t have a strong container for them, they run wild and never amount to anything other than more emotions running wild. An emotional sandwich is easy to make, less easy to digest.
Due to the complexities of our brains (having many compartments all fighting for supremacy of survival), we try and think our way towards a situation instead of using what appears to be fast becoming an outdated approach: our feet.
When I think back to my most emotionally addictive experiences, times when I have reacted to life and what it was offering me, I was completely “up in my head”. I couldn’t even feel my body so those emotions didn’t have a container to find stability from allowing me to dump my overwhelming energy on people completely out of context to the situation (you know when you fly off the handle for no apparent reason but you just can’t help yourself? Hello). Throughout all of my educational experiences of learning massage, holistic therapies and yoga, the thing that changed it all was giving my body back it’s power. Understanding just how strong it was allowed me to understand just how much I could take on, and that really it was me who was creating all of my drama. I think that’s the thing that hurts most, to find out it was me creating my own problems because my head was in control. Give your feet some power and you literally flip your world upside down. What has produced fantastic results for myself as well as my clients is bioenergetic movement to draw that excess, unruly, overwhelming energy down from the head. It’s amazing what comes up: anger, fear, tears – these are all associated with our first chakra, Muladhara, and become trapped in our body as a way of protection (as weird as it sounds, it’s true!). Locking these emotions tightly in our bodies because we don’t know we’re doing it or because we’re not challenging our movement (do you wake up from 8 hours of laying to sit in your car, to sitting in your office, to get back in your car, to sit at your dinner table, moving to the sofa and then back to bed. Shocking when you look at it like that, right), results in injury and illness.
Now, when I feel those emotions start to rise, I reach for my body. I move. Calisthenics, yoga, martial arts, mobility, animal locomotion, running – there is so much this body can do and I’m not stopping myself anymore. I find my feet, feel the earth and let the energy do what it needs to do. Your feet are your anchor to this world, a connection to something far greater than you, allowing you to shed all that expectation and emotionally energy deep into her vast dense soil. When you connect with something greater than you, you become that greatness, that unbelievable inspiration you were looking for but was always there.
Find your feet. Feel them. Move them. Challenge them. Feel alive.
