I was sent a really lovely “AAHAAA” talk by Caroline Myss (find it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KysuBl2m_w) on our choices affecting our mental and physical health. At the end of her talk, Caroline asks the crowd to choose a word that they are going to cut out of their vocabulary and give up because it defines their life (without them knowing it up until this point).
Ooohhh the words that came to me at that moment, because there are A LOT, right?! But what word defined me? What word was limiting me, what was I struggling with?…
And so I went to the start of my day when my consciousness kicked in and my eyes were still shut. What was the feeling that defined my day?
“Here we go again”… SAY WHAAAAAAT????
I am a morning person (or so I tell myself). I love the first rays of sunshine waking me up, the endless possibilities to a brand new day, the freshness of morning. But even with all that going on, I feel the overwhelming day’s chores begin to weigh heavy on my shoulders.
HARD. That’s the word. That is what I struggle with. Even though I’m an extremely upbeat person always looking for the positive in life, HARD pulls me back to a place of struggle and not being good enough (you again). I see aspects of my work as “hard”. Trying to get people to classes, trying to explain what I want to offer people, trying to get people to understand the beauty, freedom, emotional and physical benefits of movement, wanting desperately to be understood (I am an EXTREMELY emotional person. Shoot me). Try, try, try, stemming from (too high) expectation, leading to not meeting said expectation = HARD. What an equation (although feeling quite clever that I’ve worked out my own personal mathematical equation. What’s yours?)
I am privileged and honoured to have a family of such love, grit, strength and determination. We love HARD, we work HARD, we play HARD… See the pattern here? Coming from a generation of Londoners who worked the river and lived through times so hard, our generation finds it hard to believe it actually happened, that mentality has followed through the chain. And it does for all of us. We are 7 generations of our ancestors’ thoughts, patterns and movements. They are our foundation and one we should respect and visit when times look for reflection, transition and change. Not definition.
And I CHOOSE to change HARD to EASY. Easy allows you to smile during the hard times and flow through the challenges. Easy is a choice that sees the hard stuff run off your ducks back like pond water. Easy allows you to connect more with others and not think you have to do it all on your own like hard does. Hard suffocates you, easy gives you the oxygen you need to own it.
What word are you going to give up today to feed a life full of isness?
The choice is yours, right?
